I cannot believe it’s February already. The days might be getting longer but the snow has reminded us that we haven’t seen the back of winter yet! This month there’s a bumper crop of events coming up, including half term events for families along with ideas just for the grown ups. Read on to find out things to do in and around Didcot during February 2019:
1. Audition for Didcot’s Got Talent!
Can you juggle? Dance a horn pipe? Sing a ballad? Then pop along to Cornerstone on Sunday 24 February and audition for Didcot’s Got Talent; the final will be held in June. It’s all for a good cause as you’ll be helping to raise money for Play2Give. Head over to their website for details on how to enter.
2. Dance the night away at a Grease themed disco. Or maybe it’s Greek?
Dig out your fancy dress (optional) and boogie along to The Barn, Foxhall Road on Saturday 9 February between 7.30-11 pm. Tickets cost £10 and are available at the bar.
I’m a little confused exactly what to expect as some adverts announce a Greece disco, others a Grease one. So, you might be treated to a night of plate smashing and Greek dancing. Or a Summer Nights singalong. Best to check which one before you turn up in fancy dress!
3. Make a sea themed model
A half term event for families. On Saturday 23 February there’s a free drop in sea themed workshop at Cornerstone from midday to 4 pm. Suitable for 4-14 years. Use recycled materials to make model lighthouses and puppets of sharks, fish, mermaids and more.
4. Learn about canals
If you’re interested in the past then you might enjoy this talk, about the engineering, achievements and failures of English canals. It’s organised by the Didcot and District Archaeological and Historical Society; you do not need to be a member to attend (but visitors pay £4). All are welcome; it starts at 7.30 pm Thursday 14 February at the Northbourne Centre.
5. Love your birds
Head over to Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre on Tuesday 19, Wednesday 20 or Thursday 21 February between 10 am-3 pm to discover more about the fascinating world of birds. This is a family event for accompanied children aged 4-11 years. £5 per child, advance booking essential, more details here.
6. Style Acre perform Cinderella
The Style Acre team are putting on a panto! Cast members include staff and service users with learning difficulties or autism. The performance is at Didcot Civic Hall on 7.30 pm Friday 8 February. Tickets are £7.50 for an adult, £5 for a child, or £20 for a family ticket and can be bought online here.
7. Gin festival
One for the adults. Head over to Boundary Park on Friday 8 February to taste a range of gins paired with different tonics. Tickets cost £10, this includes a free glass and drink. Buy tickets from behind the bar or via Eventbrite.
8. Wildlife Wednesday
A half term family event run by the Earth Trust team. Come along to Mowbray Fields to learn more about your local wildlife. Held on Wednesday 20 February between 10 am-12 noon. Suggested donation of £2 per child.
9. ABBA angels
Fancy a night of Abba? Head along to the Marlborough Club on Saturday 23 February from 8 pm. Tickets are £7 for members, £10 for non members. There’s even a prize for the best 70s outfit!
10. Rock for Heroes
Rock along to rock and pop stars at Cornerstone and help raise funds for Help for Heroes. The live rock band will be performing songs by legends such as Queen, David Bowie and Elton John. Held on Friday 15 February at 7.30 pm. Tickets £20 from Cornerstone.
